Running and Jogging
As Boston’s most popular running path, the Esplanade is home to 5 1/2 miles of pathways. For joggers, the Healthy Heart Trail on the Esplanade begins at the Lee Pool parking lot, is 1.5 miles long, and has an easy activity level designation. For runners seeking more distance, connecting paths continue into Cambridge and Allston/Brighton.
Every May, the Esplanade Association hosts the Esplanade 5K Presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. This is a fantastic way to give back to Boston’s most beloved running route!
Paddle Boarding, Canoeing & Kayaking
Charles River Canoe and Kayak located in Cambridge offers seasonal kayak, canoe and paddleboard rentals.
During the warmer months of the year, the Esplanade provides various opportunities to catch and release fish along the Charles River.
Kite flying is permitted on the Esplanade where there are large, open spaces away from trees. Please be sure not to leave any string behind that could entangle the park’s wildlife.
Model Boat Sailing
Model boat sailing in the Charles River is a delight for both participants and observers. Adults and children may participate in model boat sailing at various times throughout the year.
Community Boating, Inc. provides lessons and boat usage for youth and adults, from beginners to advanced sailors. They offer a variety of boating, kayaking and windsurfing activities.
The Esplanade’s flat terrain is the optimal setting for in-line skating.
Don’t let the cold weather stop you from enjoying the park. Once the snow falls in Boston you can enjoy a beautiful day of snowshoeing along the Esplanade’s 3 miles of parkland.
Feel the swoosh and glide of the snow as you cross-country ski through the Esplanade park. Though there are no defined trails, the park is a wonderful venue for cross-country skiers who don’t mind creating their own path.
