Organic Park Care

The Esplanade Association is involved in many aspects of park management: major projects, landscape planning, and maintenance.

The Esplanade Association’s Horticulture Committee works in partnership with the DCR to recommend goals and design guidelines, and to prioritize projects, critical maintenance needs, and ongoing design improvements for the Esplanade’s landscape.

Our staff consists of trained professionals in the fields of horticulture and park maintenance. It is the Esplanade Association’s goal to restore and enhance the Park through sustainable landscape practices and ongoing maintenance.

How It Works

  • We collaborate with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) staff to decide on the level of care and maintenance being provided by the Esplanade Association on the Esplanade.
  • We agree to the care and maintenance of specific elements or areas within the park or throughout the entire Park.
  • Our staff and volunteers care for and maintain these elements and areas within the park and work with professional contractors, as necessary, to assist with maintenance and projects.

Maintenance

At the Esplanade Association, we believe that maintenance is fundamental. We do not undertake projects unless we are committed to maintaining them. The Association employs two full-time Horticulturists who work daily to maintain and improve the Esplanade. In addition, we host over 2,000 volunteers a year to help with park maintenance.

The Esplanade Association conducts all work at the park with environmental sensitivity, respect for the park’s historic landscape design, and an appreciation of the recreational needs of modern users.

Environmental Practices

The Esplanade Association is strongly committed to utilizing sustainable landscape practices to care for the park. All of our practices are intended to strengthen the park’s ecosystem while reducing waste and minimizing the use of harmful pesticides, fungicides, and rodenticides.
